Further information about British Gas
With a history going back as far as 1812 as the Gas Light and Coke Company, the business we know today was originally part of the publically owned British Gas Corporation. It was privatised under Margaret Thatcher in 1986 and renamed British Gas plc after which is was floated on the stock market in one of the most high profile share offers the UK has known. In 1997 British Gas plc was broken up into three separate businesses, one of these, Centrica, became owner of British Gas in its current form. British Gas is the leading UK supplier of gas and electricity, supplying over 12 million homes and also providing one of the biggest home services businesses in the UK, British Gas Homecare.
British Gas has had a number of problems over the last few years. In 2012 its use of cold calling led it to be publicly listed as one of the companies that the ICO had concerns about. Later, in 2014 after an agreement with Ofgem, the company paid compensation of £1 million to customers who had been advised to switch to British Gas through mis-selling and ‘exaggerated claims.’ (Source)
